So it’s taken me a long enough time to post a review about the Big Sick Movie.
Based on a True Story?
I was surprised to learn that the Big Sick movie is actually based on true events. If you’re not familiar with the story, Kumail Nanjiani plays a Pakistani comedian named Kumail Nanjiani.
While performing a set at a comedy club, he is heckled by a white woman named Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) — who he would later date and marry. But this movie is not about that.
What’s it all about?
It’s about the early struggles if their relationship. Kumail has a very traditional family who believe that he should follow Pakistani customs and commit to an arranged marriage. Throughout the film, Kumail keeps his relationship with Emily a secret because he fears his family will disown him. It’s only when Emily becomes sick that he realizes how much she really means to him.
So it’s all about the importance of understanding and honesty in the context of family and relationships.
Did I mention the cool cast yet?
It’s a sweet story and I like the sarcastic jabs of humor. Kumail did a great job here — especially the honest way he portrays his appreciation and criticism for his family’s traditional stance.
The supporting cast includes Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as Emily’s parents. Comedians such as Bo Burnham and Aidy Bryant also make an appearance. Throughout the movie, I kept on thinking I’d seen Holly Hunter before because her voice sounded so familiar. After some diligent research, I realized that she had played Helen Par in The Incredibles.
If you’re looking for a date movie with sarcastic jabs of humor intertwined with a heartfelt message — The Big Sick movie is a good choice.
